History Baska Voda - Historical and Cultural Information About Baska Voda
First found evidence indicate that the life in the area of Baska Voda started around 1700 BC. First inhabitants were of Indoeuropean origin; old Illyrians came later and overtook this area. After the Illyrian tribes, Romans came around in the 2nd or 3rd century BC and the remains of their culture were found in the small place called Blast as well as on the Gradina hill in Baska Voda.
The end of 4th century BC was marked by the constant attacks of the barbarian tribes on the Roman Empire, thus high defence walls had to be built around the settlement Gradina.
Croats came to Baska Voda in the 7th century and once vibrant life in Gradina slowly withered away because people moved at the base of mountain Biokovo where they had plenty of fresh water.
After barbarian tribes and pirates stopped attacking this area local population returned on the coast of Adriatic Sea and built new town of Baska Voda while main occupations included agriculture, fishing and seafaring.
After 1912, when the port was built, Baska Voda became one of the most important port towns in the area.
Hotel “Slavija” was the first hotel in Baska Voda and it was built in 1930 while intensive development of Baska Voda started after “Magistrala” motorway was built in 1968.
The “Golden Age” of tourism in Baska Voda was during the 1980 and after the war in Croatia Baska Voda invested great deal of money in improving its tourist capacities thus making this picturesque little town, a true heaven for those who seek to spend a dream holiday.
